GY6 Carburetor Flooding Fix
GY6 150cc · 6 min
If your GY6 leaks fuel from the carb or floods when you try to start it, the float needle isn't sealing. Here's how to fix it.
What you'll need
- Phillips screwdriver
- Carb cleaner
- Float needle + seat kit
Steps
Confirm the symptom
Fuel dripping from the carb overflow tube, or a strong gas smell and wet spark plug, both point to a flooding carburetor.
Remove the float bowl
Unscrew the bowl at the bottom of the carb. Catch any fuel in a rag. You'll see the plastic float and the small needle valve it controls.
Inspect the float needle
The rubber tip of the needle should be smooth. If it's grooved, worn, or has debris stuck to it, it can't seal and fuel keeps flowing.
Replace the needle and seat
Pop out the old needle, install the new one from your kit. Make sure the float moves freely up and down without binding.
Check the float height
With the carb upside down, the float should sit level. If it's bent, gently adjust the metal tab until it's even.
Reassemble and test
Put the bowl back on, turn on the fuel, and confirm there's no more dripping before you start it.
Mechanic's tip
Always use fresh, ethanol-free fuel in a GY6 if you can — ethanol gums up the tiny jets faster than anything.
